Taipei, Dec. 19 (CNA)
The inauguration of the National
Taichung Theater in November was the most important arts and culture news story
of 2014, according to an annual poll released Monday.
Central Taiwan's first opera house,
the eye-catching theater complex was designed by Pritzker Architecture
Prize-winning Japanese architect Toyo Ito and boasts a 2,014-seat grand
theater, a 800-seat theater and a 200-seat black box theater.
Architecturally complex and highly
challenging from an engineering perspective, the
theater was built without beams or columns, relying instead on 58 curved wall
units.
It is believed to be the first theater
in the world to employ such a construction
technique.
According to the survey conducted by
Taipei National University of the Arts' Graduate Institute of Arts
Administration and Management, the second most important arts story was the
opening of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre's cultural and art educational center in
Tamsui in November.
Rounding out the top three was the
closure of the Ping Fong Acting Troupe, one of Taiwan's most renowned drama groups,
in 2013 following the death of its founder Hugh Lee.
It was the second year in a row that
Cloud Gate and Ping Fong were among the top three arts newsmakers.
The exhibitions
of National Palace Museum treasures in Japan
were rated the fourth biggest arts story of the year, followed by opposition to a Taiwan-China trade-in-services pact by
members of Taiwan's cultural sector.
In sixth and seventh place were the
cultural sector's call for the re-opening of performance center Novel Hall and
the death of music maestro Lee Tai-hsiang, respectively, the survey showed.
The last three stories in the top 10
were the launch of the National Performing Arts
Center, the death of architecture scholar Han Pao-teh, and the dispute surrounding the Ministry of Culture's push for
a pop music talent certification system, the
survey found.
The survey asked scholars to rate the
40 most important arts and culture news stories for 2014, before asking the
faculty and students from Taipei National University of the Arts to select the
25 most important stories out of the list of 40.
The 25 news items were then put to
public vote and the results were determined from
the 1,118 samples collected.
